Team Injinji Athlete Tara Dower is an ultrarunner and Fastest Known Time (FKT) record-setter known for tackling some of the toughest long-distance trails in the U.S. In 2024, Tara set the FKT on the Appalachian Trail in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. Most recently, she set a new FKT on the Long Trail.
When it comes to long races and multi-day treks, having the right gear makes all the difference. From head to toe (literally), here’s what Team Injinji Athlete Tara Dower trusts to keep her moving strong—and having fun—on the trails.

Tara Dower’s Must-Have Trail Running Gear
Shoes: Altra Olympus 275 and the Timp when needed
Socks: Tara’s favorite trail running socks are the Injinji Women’s Trail Midweight Mini-Crew. She has 25 pairs in her sock drawer! These socks are double-cuffed to seal out dirt and debris, and moisture-wicking fibers keep feet dry, comfortable and blister-free.
Poles: The Leki Vertical K poles are super light and won’t weigh you down.
Vest: UltrAspire hydration vests are functional, sleek and lightweight. Tara wears the Alpha 6 Race Vest 6.0L which has 9 pockets and is available in 3 sizes. Sometimes she’ll opt for a race waist belt which can easily fit a cell phone, nutrition and hydration.
Clothing: Tara’s go-to racing shorts are the SOAR compression shorts that are ultra-light and waistband-free with targeted support. For multi-day efforts and FKTs, she’ll wear the SOAR Split Shorts to give her body some more breathing room. She’ll typically pack a rain shell for unexpected weather or chillier days.
Nutrition: Finding the right fueling methods can take time, but Tara has it figured out. She uses Enervit Liquid Gel Orange, Precision Fuel salt capsules, various sugary candies, in combination with some homemade food. Her favorite fueling candies are the Twizzler candy filled twists and Nerds clusters. And yes, that’s where the trail name Candy Mama comes from.
Headphones: Airpods
Watch: Tara tracks her training and racing with a Coros Vertix watch.
