Where do you live and train?

Edmonton , Alberta . I train mostly on the River Valley trails. I travel to Keremeos, B.C. during the year as well where I train on the Eagle Endurance Sports racecourses. The Keremeos area has excellent running terrain as well as Apex Mountain Resort – home of Logan’s Run.

Ideal training spot, conditions, companions?

My ideal training spot would have to be on the trails. Wherever I can find trails away from the noisy hustle bustle. My ideal training spot would be Keremeos (Ultra-Running Capitol of Canada) Apex Mountain Resort – home of Logan ’s Run 50/25km or the continuous climbs at the Keremeos Kruncher 50/25km. The Keremeos area is North America ’s best-kept secret.

Years running, cycling, or competing?

I’ve been running since I was a kid. I came in 5th place in the B.C. cross-country finals for ten year olds. I ran recreationally throughout my teens. I’ve been running ultras for over twelve years but more seriously/competitively for five years.

What type of races do you prefer (i.e trail ultras)?

I prefer mountainous, non-technical trails with varied terrain.

How did you hear or find out about Injinji tetratsoks?

I first found out about Injinji tetratsoks by seeing the ads in Ultra Running/Trail Runner. I heard very good things about the socks and I checked out the Injinji website.

How long have you been wearing the tetratsoks?

The first pair that I bought was almost a year ago.

Your personal tetratsok of choice?

All of the socks look great to me but I would have to say that my tetratsok of choice would be the Injinji Tetratsok Crew Socks. The quarter sock is great but I prefer the longer sock. The Nuwool for winter/all season running look great too. Tetratsoks are ideal for training/competing and casual wear.

How do the tsoks work for you, and what do you like best about them?

The tsoks are the most comfortable socks that I’ve ever worn. They are great as they prevent blisters or hot spots.

How have the tetratsoks changed your experience training and competing?

They give me the confidence that my feet will not suffer from irritation even in the long runs.

What would you most like to accomplish athletically presently and/or long-term?

From now on I will focus on certain races, not taking on too much. I am now running smarter and I plan to stay healthy/in race shape. I am fortunate to have an excellent team of professionals at River Valley Health in Edmonton, Alberta. They keep my body healthy and keep me running. I am always looking for areas of improvement and that’s where the tsoks come in. I have several years of improvement ahead of me. Continuing to improve is important to me and my passion for running keeps growing.

Favorite Quotation or Personal Motto?

My favorite quotation: It is not necessary to change.  Survival is not mandatory. W. Edwards Deming . My favorite motto: My life is running…running is my life.

What inspires you to reach for more in your sport and in your life ?

The feeling of accomplishment, being fit and knowing that running is a lifestyle and there is no real finish line.

Favorite foods for training and competing?

I always eat oatmeal or Red River with flax, mixed fruit and soymilk and a coffee before training or competing. Before a race, I also eat a small amount of rice pudding. Honey Stinger works best for me when I am competing.

Favorite post race meal?

I like eating a variety of foods after a race. After a race I may stray from my regular diet and eat more fat and protein.

Other hobbies or interests that you like to spend your time doing?

I love the outdoors. I like spending time walking and hiking when I’m not running. I enjoy cross training and working out with weights. I enjoy improving my public speaking with the Toast Masters club that I am involved with.

Advice you would give to someone just starting out running or cycling, or in a new sport in general?

Find the peer group with like interests. Try not to get discouraged along the way and don’t be hard on yourself. Start easy and work your way up from there.

Best advice you have ever received from a fellow athlete, or non-athlete?

Don’t start to hard and pace myself more of an even pacer.

Personal hero or role model?

My father, Moe the Eagle has played such an important role in my recovery. He is not only responsible for what I am doing today but he motivated and encouraged me along the way. Athletes like Terry Fox and Rick Hansen and any athletes that do extraordinary things. Those athletes that have overcome obstacles and have beaten the odds.
