Where do you live and train?
Rhode Island. I train statewide and throughout New England .
Ideal training spot, conditions, companions?
Miles of scenic coastline and beaches provide torturous in/off-season snowshoe training and sandshoe racing venues. There are innumerable hills, coves, dunes, and the like inland to adequately test one’s mettle and flirt with the precipice. I thrive on inclement weather and less than ideal conditions. The heat, rain, sleet, snow, swirling wind, and cold temperatures along with varied terrain are welcomed.
Although I periodically ride with a small group of cyclists; I have always preferred to train alone.
Years running, cycling, or competing - 30
What type of races do you prefer (i.e. trail ultras)?
Arduous, long-distance sand/snowshoe races. Ultra events with a charitable component inspire me to help others.
How did you hear or find out about Injinji tetratsoks?
The Badwater Ultra.
How long have you been wearing the tetratsoks?
Since 2003
Your personal tetratsok of choice?
The Performance model. I wear all of them. The perplexed looks on peoples’ faces when I wear the tsoks with sandals are classic.
How do the tsoks work for you, and what do you like best about them?
The tsoks have eliminated my lifelong issues with blisters, hot spots, and the rest of it. This has been especially noticeable with new running shoes, hiking boots, and footwear. The comfort of the tsoks is unmatched.
How have the tetratsoks changed your experience training and competing?
The tsoks have given me peace of mind. I no longer have to experiment with other fabrics, products, or companies. Gone are the bandages, tape, patches, gels, and related products to mask the problems. I now simply flow with my workouts. My approach to rigorous training has transformed from pain management to economy of motion.
What would you most like to accomplish athletically presently or long-term?
Continued optimum wellness and mindful living.
Favorite quotation or personal motto?
‘Through the discipline of training, life bears many dreams.’ Embrace difficulty and live with boldness.
What inspires you to reach for more in your sport and in your life?
My unrelenting Nordic verve.
Favorite foods for training and competing?
I incorporate a plant-based diet for wellness, sport performance, and planetary awareness.
Other hobbies or interests that you like to spend your time doing?
Spending time with my family. Raising funds for animal welfare and environmental charities through sport. Reading about and researching the mind, body, and spirit nexus, organic nutrition, green living, and the like. Music, movies, and sports….
Advice you would give to someone just starting out running, cycling, or in a new sport?
Believe in yourself. Merge with your fitness/training.
Best advice you have ever received from a fellow athlete or non-athlete?
Never quit living your passion.
Personal hero or role model?
My wife, Sharon--for her tenacious spirit to overcome adversity and live life with unimaginable zest and graciousness. My parents—for their patience and instilling in me the courage to live my Truth.
